Scorpions are a highly feared pest in certain areas of Henderson and are commonly found invading homes in the new suburbs all around Las Vegas. Three species of scorpion common to the Las Vegas area are bark scorpions, emperor scorpions, and desert hairy scorpions; they generally do not burrow but hide under bark, rocks, mulch, dead vegetation, and yard debris, and cracks, and crevices of structures. All Scorpions have a venomous stings, but most do not pose a severe threat to humans, and most stings do not require medical treatment. Scorpions are predators of other insects, but larger adults may hunt lizards and mice. They are excellent climbers; we have witnessed scorpions climb stucco houses to access the attic space or to reach other insects on multiple occasions. They are nocturnal and hunt at night. They can eat a vast amount of food at a time, and they have a great food storage system in their bodies that allow them to go without food for 6-12 months afterward. Mating can occur in the fall, spring, and early summer. The female gives birth to a litter or “Brood” of 10-45 young, which she carries on her back until their first molt. Adults can have several broods. The average life span for a scorpion is 3-8 years.
